Genre Research: Western & Horror

 


Western is a genre that film uses to focus on the American west period. It uses things to emphasize drama in these films. They do this through backlighting. They also try to show an initiate conflict or bring out the setting of the film. They do this through low-keep lighting. Bright lighting is used for introduction, especially on characters. The angles are used for many reasons. High angles are used to shows someone's head and the landscape around them. Close-ups are used to bring out conflicts and characters staring each other down. The characters are also usually cowboys to highlight this era.
 
Horror is a genre that is meant to scare and startle the viewers and audiences for films. This is achieved through scary images, situations, and themes. The lighting plays a large part in creating fear in the audience. Different lighting is used on different characters to highlight what they are in the film. Common lighting is high key, low key, and three-point lighting. Camera angles are important to highlight the situation and scene to appear more frightening. These are achieved through low and high angles, dutch angles, and over the should shots. Camera movement is also important in horror films. They are used to highlight and make you follow what is happening in the scene. Some common movements are zooms, tilts, handheld, and tracking. What drives people towards this genre is the tension and unrealistic factors in the film.
